Soulwax, 2 many DJ’s or the Dewaele brothers… as Soulwax they are probably best known by now, even if the actual band concept behind this name is very much intertwined with the 2 many DJ’s concept. Not only have they DJ’d as Soulwax with mix series or radio shows like Hang All DJ’s, but last year they recorded an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1.
The first hour consists of 14 tracks specially produced for this mix and the second hour continues with an incredibly well chosen and rapidly mixed variety of classics and edits. Both hours are brilliant!
In June, 12 of the 14 tracks were released as the album Essential and landed high on the list of the best albums of the year so far, not only for the Mixmag editorial team. Surprisingly, the album is being talked about more than From Deewee or the Café Belgica soundtrack. Although the latter is just as ingenious, as the two brothers specially conceived the bands that appear in it.
The Essential album is available from your favourite streaming service and, with download codes, on vinyl via Bandcamp. In addition to the albums just mentioned, As Heard On Radio Soulwax Part 9 and the first edition of Get yer yo yo’s out are also well worth a listen.
